The Eleutherolakonen ( ancient Greek Ἐλευθερολάκωνες "Free Lacons") were a union of several former Spartan Periökenstädte on the coast of the Laconian Gulf . Originally they were cities that were dependent on Sparta . After the defeat of Nabis were detached from Sparta and placed under the protection of the Achaean League by the Romans . 146 BC These cities formed a federation for the first time since the reorganization in 21 BC. BC called by Emperor Augustus "League of Eleutherolakonen". The individual members formed independent poleis , some of which issued their own coins during the Roman Empire . The League of Eleutherolacons was dissolved by Emperor Diocletian in 297 when he reorganized the Roman Empire.
