Eleutherolakonen
The Eleutherolakonen ( ancient Greek Ἐλευθερολάκωνες "Free Lacons") were a union of several former Spartan Periökenstädte on the coast of the Laconian Gulf . Originally they were cities that were dependent on Sparta . After the defeat of Nabis were detached from Sparta and placed under the protection of the Achaean League by the Romans . 146 BC These cities formed a federation for the first time since the reorganization in 21 BC. BC called by Emperor Augustus "League of Eleutherolakonen". The individual members formed independent poleis , some of which issued their own coins during the Roman Empire . The League of Eleutherolacons was dissolved by Emperor Diocletian in 297 when he reorganized the Roman Empire.
According to Pausanias , eighteen of the original twenty-four cities belonged to the Eleutherolacons:
- on the Mani peninsula : Aigiai , Gythion , Las , Teuthrone , Pyrrhichos , Kainepolis on the promontory Tainaron, Oitylos , Leuktra (Mani) , Thalamai , Alagonia , Gerenia
- on the Parnon peninsula : Asopos , Akriai , Boiai , Zarax , Epidauros Limera , Brasiai , Geronthrai , Marios
