Qāen ( Persian قائن; other spellings Qayen , Ghayen , Ghajen or Ghaen ) is a city in the province of South Khorasan in Iran . The city is best known for its saffron and is therefore also known as the city of saffron . The spice produced here is characterized by its unique aroma and the intensity of its color. In addition to saffron, the city produces u. a. also carpets .
The city, which is surrounded by a mud wall, has a very varied history. In its current form, it was created in the 15th century and then came under the rule of different tribes and peoples: In the 16th century it was conquered by the Uzbeks and came under the control of Shah Abbas I around 1600. In the 18th century the city fell to the Afghans .
One of the city's attractions is the Bozorgmehr Qainis burial site , located 5 km south of the city.
In the Ardakul earthquake on May 10, 1997, 2,400 people died in the city and its surroundings.
