Hafez Assad Mausoleum in Kardaha

Qardaha , sometimes also written Kardaha ( Arabic القرداحة, DMG al-Qardāḥa ), is a small town in the Latakia Governorate in northwest Syria on the slopes of the Jebel Ansariye . Mostly Alawites live in the village .

Qardaha is about 30 kilometers from Latakia and is the hometown of the longtime Syrian President Hafiz al-Assad , who was born in 1930 into a regionally respected family of farmers. Assad later became an officer and politician in the Ba'ath Party . When he was buried on June 13, 2000, the place experienced an impressive state funeral , attended by numerous Arab presidents and Western foreign ministers. Assad's eldest son Basil was also buried in the mausoleum , which was built in 1994 . Assad's cenotaph is in the middle of the dome, and his son's on one side.

At the time of Assad's birth the place had about 1,800 inhabitants, at the beginning of his presidency in 1971 there were 3,357 inhabitants. For 2010 just under 18,000 inhabitants are estimated.

With al-Qardaha, Qardaha can boast a successful football club.
