The Qasigiannguit Museum ( Danish Qasigiannguit Museum , Greenlandic Qasigiannguit Katersugaasiviat ) is the local museum of Qasigiannguit .

history

The plan to open a museum in Qasigiannguit was made in the mid-1970s. In 1977 the municipality of Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel asked for a suitable building to be provided. Building B-8 was handed over in June 1981. After renovations and the collection of sufficient museum objects, exhibitions were shown in the museum for the first time in 1982/83. In 1984 it was officially opened and recognized. In 1988 the museum moved to B-3 after trying to get B-4. In the 1990s, building B-4 could still be taken over. Three other buildings were later taken over, so that the museum in Qasigiannguit is more or less an open-air museum today.

building

The following buildings belong to the Qasigiannguit Museum:

  • B-3 : The building was built in 1752 and is the former home of the colonial administrator. It has served as a museum building since 1988 and is now the main building of the museum. This is where the library, the photo archive and permanent and changing exhibitions are located.
  • B-4 : The building dates from 1734 and is one of the oldest in the country. It used to be a shop. In 1997 it was handed over to the museum. It now houses the archaeological exhibition.
  • B-5 : The building serves as a museum warehouse.
  • B-8 : The building is the first of the museum and the former home of the tele-administrator.
  • B-18 : The building serves as a museum workshop. It is a significant part of the interactive Living Space project , which recreates a 17th and 18th century residential space to bring traditional culture to life.
  • B-186 : The do-it-yourself house is one of the museum's two examples of typical Greenlandic architecture.
  • B-768 : This is a replica of a traditional peat wall house that was built in the 1990s and has been part of the museum since 1997.

With the exception of the last two replicas mentioned, all buildings are protected. For detailed descriptions of the history and architecture of the individual buildings, see the list of architectural monuments in Qasigiannguit .

exhibition

The Qasigiannguit Museum has a wide range of exhibitions:

  • It deals with the history of the city during the colonial period from 1734 to the late 1940s. A special focus is on the presentation of old firearms and their manufacture.
  • With the end of the shrimp fishery in Qasigiannguit, the museum took up the topic in the 1990s. From 50 years of shrimp fishing from the 1940s onwards, production, working life and the influence on the city's history are discussed.
  • Like many other museums in the country, the Qasigiannguit Museum exhibits Greenlandic clothing.
  • The hunter and fisher culture is dealt with. These among others are kayaks , umiaks , tents and hunting equipment issued. Whale hunting is a particular theme.
  • The archaeological collection deals with the finds from the Saqqaq culture that have been discovered nearby.
  • The museum has a small collection of stuffed Greenland birds.
  • The geological collection shows minerals and rocks typical of the area .
  • In addition, there are always special exhibitions on various topics in the museum.
