Qin Jiwei
Qin Jiwei ( Chinese 秦 基 偉 / 秦 基 伟 , Pinyin Qín Jīwěi ; born November 1914 in Hong'an ; † February 2, 1997 in Beijing ) was a Chinese general of the People's Liberation Army and a politician of the Communist Party of China .
Life
Qin completed his military training under the leadership of Xu Haidong and Xu Xiangqian and alongside later generals such as Chen Zaidao and Xu Shiyou . From 1927 to 1993 he served in the army . He took part in the Second Sino-Japanese War from 1937 to 1945, the Chinese Civil War from 1946 to 1950 and the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. In 1988, he succeeded Zhang Aiping as Defense Minister of the People's Republic of China .
In 1989 he played a decisive role in the Tiananmen massacre . Although he initially had concerns, he followed Deng Xiaoping's orders in his role as acting defense minister and general . He was succeeded as Defense Minister in 1993 by Chi Haotian . At the time of his death he was vice chairman of the National People's Congress .
