Qin Yongpei (覃永沛, also Tan Yongpei, born around 1969) is a Chinese human rights attorney . He lives in Nanning , the capital of the Guangxi Autonomous Region . Because of his criticism of the regime's behavior, his lawyer license was revoked in May 2018. He was arrested in early November 2019.

Life

In 2015, in Nanning, Qin Yongpei witnessed attacks on a fellow lawyer, Xie Yang, who was seriously injured by gang members. Xie Yang represented the interests of Xu Chunhe's mother , who was shot dead by a police officer at a train station in the northeast that year. At the time, Qin Yongpei criticized that the police could not be reached and did not intervene. More than 20 perpetrators injured a total of eight people at the time. Qin Yongpei had invited the colleague to Nanning to help him with a difficult case.

He lost his lawyer license in May 2018. On September 29, 2018, he founded the China Lawyers' Club , an association of former lawyers who wanted to mediate their services. In November he had to dismantle the association's door plate. A house search took place there in January 2019.

Doriane Lau, China expert at Amnesty International , said Qin had "attracted a lot of attention from the authorities with his public criticism and reporting of senior government officials." AFP news agency reported that Qin Yongpei was formally detained on December 7, 2019. According to the arrest warrant, which the agency was able to inspect, he was accused of “inciting the destruction of state power”. In a telephone interview, his wife, Deng Xiaoyun, said her husband was arrested for making critical statements in online media. Among other things, he reported on the protests in Hong Kong . Lawyer colleague Sui Muqing characterized the arrest as "overt political persecution" by the regime, an "escalation in the political persecution of lawyers". Sui is among the more than 200 lawyers arrested at the same time in 2015.
