QuakeNet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The QuakeNet is the largest IRC networks in the world. It was founded in 1997 by Garfield and Oli for QuakeWorld players as a "refuge" from other networks, but over time it has also attracted many players from other computer games and non-gamers.

statistics

The record of 243,389 users logged in simultaneously was set on February 8, 2005. Quakenet was the largest IRC network in the world at the time, but had to give up this status to freenode in 2012 . On average, around 13,000 users use the Quakenet (as of 2020).

Well-known channels

The most popular channel in Quakenet are traditional meeting places for reconciliation of clan wars #pcw or other challenges such as the most visited in December 2008 Channel # or # cod4.wars 5on5.css. Channels of various games and game clans such as World of Warcraft or Counter-Strike are also very popular . In addition to the gaming channels, some subcultures have formed, such as music or football chats. A famous example is the web radio station RauteMusik , whose name is directly related to the prefixes used in Quakenet in the form of a hash sign and which became a cross-media and online brand after it was founded in the #musik channel.

IRC services

Unlike in many other networks, the IRC services are all single-letter and present as clients in the network itself. The best known are Q and S (Spamscan). There are also services D, P, T, NO, O, R and G. These are used for various tasks, G is used to support the users and the help team. R contains all request functions, with the help of which you can, for example, bring bots into your own channel or become an Op. O includes some functions for the IRC operators . The primary task of Q (Quakenet Service) is to "guard" channels in order to enable the owners and other users with rights to leave and re-enter without loss of rights. S checks everything that is spoken in very large channels in order to track down potential spammers and remove them from the network. P is the control instance of the proxy scanner, which checks the connections for open proxy servers and closes them if necessary. T is the control instance of the Trojan scanner. D produces channel statistics that can be called up via a web interface .

Q and L were replaced by a newly developed Q (code name Q9) in March 2008. In contrast to the Q, the Channelbot L, with its reduced functionality, had the task of relieving the old Q, especially in smaller channels.

technology

Nowadays, Quakenet uses a patch for ircu as server software , the Undernet's IRCd called snircd , which is based on the P10 protocol . The patch contains some modifications and additions to the original ircu. Asuka was used previously.

Additional modes

User modes

Special user modes in Quakenet that go beyond the usual are:

d Deaf mode: The user does not receive any channel messages. ( e.g. to save data traffic )
x Registered users get the following host: <username> .users.quakenet.org. (real IP is disguised)
R. Private messages (Query, Notice, Invite) only from registered users. (Used to protect against spam, spammers are usually not registered in the network.)
w To be able to see walluser messages sent by IRC operators.

Channel modes

Special channel modes that go beyond the usual are in Quakenet:

c Control codes (colors, underlining, bold) are no longer possible.
C. No channel- wide CTCPs possible.
D / d Delayed-join-mode (+ D): Users only become visible when writing or setting a mode. Mode + d means that "Delayed join" has been deactivated, but users in the channel are still invisible. It is waited until nobody is invisible anymore.
N No channel-wide notice possible.
r Only registered users can enter the channel.
u No quit / part messages. If a user is in a channel with + u, his quit message is set to "Signed off" and his part message is suppressed. This prevents advertising.
T Blocks multitarget messages ( called 'amsgs' in the mIRC client).
M. Only registered users can post messages
