Quality Street is a mix of individually wrapped and boxed candy- like sweets made by Nestlé in Halifax , United Kingdom .

history

Quality Street was launched in 1936 by the Halifax pastry shop Mackintosh. The name comes from the play of the same name by JM Barrie . "Major" and "Miss," inspired by the play's two main characters, were featured on all Quality Street boxes and tin cans through 2000.

The original templates for "Major" and "Miss" were Iris and Tony Coles from Chingford, Essex (now Greater London ), children of the advertising artist Sydney Coles, who created the product image.

In 1988 the brand was acquired by Nestlé with the purchase of Rowntree’s . The brand was one of the reasons for the takeover.

To expand the brand, several larger versions of the more popular varieties have been made and sold individually in recent years. In particular, the hazelnut chocolate was marketed as " The Big Purple One " according to its traditional wrapping paper .

Quality Street is often associated with Christmas in the United Kingdom, United States , Ireland , Canada , Denmark and Iceland (where it is traditionally called "Mackintosh") and is purchased as a gift during this time.
