The Quartier V (the "Heinrich Schütz residence") is a complex of three buildings formerly at Dresdner Neumarkt , of which two buildings have been largely rebuilt faithful to the original facade. These are the Heinrich Schütz House and the Koehler House . The “southern extension” towards Wilsdruffer Straße is a modern new building, which only partially reflects the layout of the previous building due to the relocation of Wilsdruffer Straße, which was widened after the Second World War , towards Neumarkt.

Description and significance in terms of architectural history

The ten-axis main front of the ensemble of three different buildings on the corner of Neumarkt and Frauenstrasse, which stood directly opposite the medieval city wall until the middle of the 16th century , belongs to the early history of Dresden's Neumarkt. In 1548 the moat and wall of the former city fortifications were removed on today's Neumarkt. In the basement of the rebuilt Quartier V., parts of the city wall have been preserved in historical cellar vaults. The Renaissance house , which belonged to the composer Heinrich Schütz from 1629 to 1659, was heavily rebuilt around 1730 by the architect of the Dresden Frauenkirche, George Bähr , so that only the round bay window and the early Baroque entrance portal "Neumarkt 12", which was added in 1695, remained. The portal shows a woman's mask, surrounded by oak leaves, of the Roman goddess Ceres , who was considered the goddess of fertility. The house “Neumarkt 12”, which was rebuilt in 2008, was owned by the merchant and merchant Christian Döppermann († 1759) after 1730, whose family also used the neighboring house (Frauenstrasse 14), built around 1750, for their commercial activities from 1813 onwards. The renovation of the house by George Bähr went hand in hand with the addition of one floor and the construction of a mansard roof .

The main decoration of the renaissance recital is a so-called “children's frieze” created around 1548, which is considered to symbolize the biblical theme of the “children of wisdom playing” ( Mt 18.3  EU ). The playing children symbolize the divine wisdom, which was a blessing from the host.

The Köhler house was built around 1750 by order of the cooper master Johann Köhler with a richly decorated rococo facade based on designs by the architect Andreas Adam, who died in 1746 . The portal relief shows the god Janus in front of a vineyard. On its youthful (right) side, putti do the hard work of tending the vines in a vineyard in spring. The other side shows the harvest of the ripened grapes. The richly decorated bay window above a satyr and Bachus head under the first floor shows the work steps of barrel making, read from bottom to top, through putti. The putti emerge vividly on the crowning stone balustrade.

History of the present

The Quartier V has after its reconstruction in 2008, more than 47 barrier-free apartments. Martinshof Rothenburg Diakoniewerk , which operates a senior citizens' residence under the name Heinrich Schütz Residenz , is the sponsor and builder . In addition, under the same sponsorship, a restaurant, a wine shop and a SPA area are housed in the three buildings, as well as a multifunctional hall that replaced the previous shops on the Neumarkt side. The individual entrances to the earlier shops gave way in favor of a listed window front. The three historic houses are no longer separated inside from the first floor. Only at the transition to the modernly designed "southern extension" is a visible fire protection door an indication of the transition to another building. The apartments are accessible to the historically rebuilt atrium in the core of the building. The historic Dresden city wall in the basement is a publicly accessible part of the restaurant on the ground floor. Another access to the listed vaults in the first basement is possible through the Frauenstraße 14 entrance. Quartier V has been the seat of the consular mission of the Kingdom of Spain and the Republic of Ecuador since 2008.
