The Quartz Hills are an arched group of mostly ice-free hills and mountain peaks in Marie Byrd Land, West Antarctica . They rise immediately south of the Colorado Glacier along the western flank of the Reedy Glacier .
The United States Geological Survey mapped them on the basis of their own measurements and using aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964. The designation was based on the suggestion of the geologist John H. Mercer (1922-1987) from Ohio State University , who did this Hill explored from 1964 to 1965 as part of the United States Antarctic Research Program . The name is derived from the superficial deposits of rose quartz found here .
