Quatuor Ysaÿe (1984)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Quatuor Ysaÿe , also known internationally as the Ysaÿe Quartet , was a French string quartet that existed from 1984 to 2014 . It was founded by the violist Miguel da Silva when he was a student at the Paris Conservatory and is named after the Belgian violinist, quartet player and composer Eugène Ysaÿe . Confusion with the original Ysaÿe Quartet (1886) by Eugène Ysaÿe and Mathieu Crickboom, which is highly effective in music history, is actually impossible in the respective context.

history

Since its inception, the Quatuor Ysaÿe has worked closely with Walter Levin from the LaSalle Quartet and with the Cologne Amadeus Quartet . In 1988 the Quatuor Ysaÿe was the first French string quartet to win the Concours international d'Evian .

The quartet has performed regularly in major American, Asian, and European concert halls. It took part in festivals such as the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg or the Schleswig-Holstein Festival . The ensemble's interest in performing contemporary music was a catalyst for composing new works by composers such as André Boucourechliev , Pascal Dusapin and Thierry Escaich .

The discography of Quatuor Ysaÿe contains recordings of works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Debussy, Ravel and Fauré from labels such as Harmonia Mundi , Philips and Decca .

In 2001 the quartet was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros for recording the entire quartets by André Boucourechliev . Since 1994 the Quatuor Ysaÿe developed a deep interest in teaching and established a string quartet class at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris.
