Quax (pelican)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quax (also Quaks , † February 16, 2012 in Mannheim ) was a free-living female pelican who belonged to the great white pelicans and had toured Central Europe since September 2008. It was named by Bavarian ornithologists after the film Quax, the break pilot with Heinz Rühmann .

She spent a lot of time in the Rhine-Neckar area and the neighboring Palatinate , where she chose the Mannheim Luisenpark and the bird park in Bobenheim-Roxheim as bases. She could easily be identified by a clearly visible ulcer on the right foot. On February 16, she was found seriously injured with internal bleeding and a tear in the liver near the Palatinate town of Bobenheim-Roxheim and was taken to Luisenpark Mannheim, where she died despite receiving veterinary care.

Ornithologists viewed Quax with great interest, as they accompanied white storks on their bird migration and also wintered with them in Spain. The reason for this unusual behavior is unknown.
