action

Melissa Webber lives with her parents in an older house by the lake. Her father, a genetic researcher, is working on special plants due to the increasing world population to defeat hunger. One day Melissa is playing on a jetty near her parents' house. There she discovers a crab that has got caught on the bank. She frees the crab and feeds it the berries of the genetically modified plant. This will cause the crab to start growing. When Melissa's mother discovers a very large crab in the laundry room, she panics and calls her husband for help. Since an experiment is not under observation, it comes to an explosion in which Melissa's parents die.

She grows up with her uncle, Sheriff Ray. Melissa inherits an old farm with access to the river. A farmer reports property damage to his barn to the local police department and that several cows have been torn down. The sheriff and his assistant Sonny discover strange footprints in the ground. They follow the trail to Melissa's farm. However, she defends her property against the intruders by force of arms. That's why the law enforcement officers take plaster casts of the tracks and send them to a research laboratory.

Stewart MacKendrick is sent to assess the situation on site. At the same time, Melissa gets a visit from her former best friend, actress Jennifer Kane. In a bar, the bartender suggests bringing young woman Daisy home. On the way he tries to offend her. Daisy manages to escape. Her pursuer is killed by the crab's offspring. Meanwhile, Melissa and Jennifer decide to go to the local bar for a drink. Then they find out that the real bartender Moe has disappeared. Villager Sketch appears, claiming he ran over several large crabs on the road and was eventually attacked by a crab the size of a boat.

MacKendrick discovers the shell of the giant crab that has been shed. Later there is a confrontation with the giant crab and a farmer's wife, as she destroyed the eggs and is therefore killed. All leads lead to Melissa's farm, which is why she is arrested. However, she is rescued by the giant crab from the deputy sheriff's vehicle, who was previously killed by the crab. The sheriff decides to hunt the crab and mobilizes all villagers. Together they fire at the animal. This escapes into a lake, whereupon the sheriff asks the National Guard for air support. Melissa and Jennifer, meanwhile under arrest, get a visit from MacKendrick. In a conversation with the women he realizes that the aggressiveness of the crab results from the fact that some villagers killed their children and destroyed the eggs. They secretly sink the crab's sloughed skin into the lake. When the lake is then bombed, it looks like the giant crab is dead. In fact, it's just the outer shell of the giant crab. At the end you see the giant crab with Melissa at another lake.

background

The animation of the giant crab was realized by stop-motion . It is an old animation technique that was mainly used in monster films of the 20th century such as The Lost World or King Kong and the White Woman .

criticism

“Director and B-film fan Brett Piper (“ Arachnia ”) had the crab animated using nostalgic stop-motion technology. It is reminiscent of the monster films of the 50s. The script, set and actors, however, are shamefully amateurish. "

“Animal horror trash film that presents itself as an homage to the 1950s thanks to its slow motion technique. Deliberately undemanding and full of technical errors, at best for horror nostalgics and fans of bad films with a certain appeal. "
