Swelling reaction

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The swelling reaction is a biochemical method for identifying the glycocalyx of Streptococcus pneumoniae , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Neisseria meningitidis , Haemophilus influenzae , Escherichia coli and Salmonella with the help of antibodies . The swelling reaction is based on the same principle as the Gruber-Widal reaction .

properties

As the antibodies bind to bacterial antigens on the cell wall , the bacterial capsule (glycocalyx) appears cloudy and enlarged under a light microscope . The enlargement of the bacterial capsule was originally referred to as swelling when it was first described by Fred Neufeld in 1902 , although - as is known today - it is not an absorption of liquid. Immune sera were originally used as antibody-containing solutions .

Through the swelling reaction, 93 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae can be distinguished, but PCR-based detection methods are increasingly being used.
