The Quendale Mill is a water mill on the Scottish Shetland island of Mainland . In 1977 it was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The construction of the mill was commissioned in 1867 by the Grierson family , the lairds of the lands. It started operations the following year. Over the years, various millers managed the plant:

  • 1867-1870: John Anderson
  • 1870-1870: James Burnett
  • 1870–1886: Charles Langskail
  • 1886-1889: Alex Simpson
  • 1899-1911: Laurence Leslie
  • 1911–1913:? Scott
  • 1913-1916: Laurence Leslie
  • 1916-1918: Adam Eunson
  • 1918-1930: Laurence Leslie
  • 1930-1932: Andrew Arcus
  • 1932-1941: Laurence Leslie
  • 1941-1948: Adam Eunson

In 1948 the mill was finally decommissioned. The South Mainland Community History Group later restored the mill and offers guided tours for visitors.

Their main operating time was in the winter months, which is due to the adequate water supply. The Quendale Mill was used by farmers in the area, but farmers who lived further away, up to Scalloway or Whiteness , 40 kilometers away , had their grain processed there. Basically, barley and oats were ground, the flour of which is used to make regional breads.

description

The building built into the slope is one-story and consists of quarry stone . The window and door openings are partially edged with sandstone . Two adjacent gable ends face to the northeast and are flanked by wings on both sides. The wing to the northwest has a square base and housed the kiln , which ends with a pyramid roof . The overshot water wheel to drive the mechanics is in front of the right of the two gable ends. The cast iron wheel has eight spokes and is equipped with wooden blades. The small stream Burn of Quendale was dammed above the mill to provide water , for which purpose an earth dam with an adjustable sluice was built. The outbuildings include a U-shaped barn.
