Quick is an originally Belgian fast food chain that has been French-owned since 2007 and taken over by Burger King in 2015 . It is mainly represented in Belgium, France and Luxembourg.

history

The first restaurant was opened in 1971 in the Belgian city of Schoten .

In 2007 Quick was nationalized: Since then, the owner has been the French state bank Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations .

In 2009 Quick owned 460 restaurants in Europe, mainly in France, Belgium and Luxembourg, but also in the Maghreb countries, Russia, New Caledonia and Réunion . The restaurant chain also has drive-in restaurants in France, Belgium and Luxembourg . Quick is currently the largest European fast food chain and advertises with the slogan “Je gaat voor z'n smaak” (“You go for its taste”) and “Nous, c'est le goût” (“We, that is the taste").

Quick is also represented in Algeria. Because of the predominantly Muslim population, there are only poultry and beef on the menu.

Takeover by Burger King

In December 2015, Quick was taken over by Burger King, which had previously not been represented in Quick's main markets of France and Belgium. Under the new owner, almost all Quick branches in France, Belgium and Luxembourg will gradually be redesigned as Burger King and more restaurants will be opened. It is planned to have a network of 600 branches in France by 2020. In fact, there are delays and ambiguities in some places with the change of flag to Burger King, so the Luxembourg Quick restarants are to continue to operate as Quick for the time being.

Quick in Germany

In the early 1980s, the chain tried to gain a foothold in Germany under the name Sam's Quick . There were restaurants u. a. in Düsseldorf, Cologne, Dortmund, Bonn, Wuppertal, Gelsenkirchen, Oldenburg, Koblenz, Heidelberg, Nuremberg, Munich and Darmstadt. But then they withdrew from the German market. The partner in Germany was Kaufhof AG with its gastronomic offshoot KGSG.

Controversy

In February 2010, the fast food chain announced that it was converting the entire range of food to halāl -certified foods in 8 of its 350 branches in France ; Halāl meat refers to animals slaughtered according to Islamic law. This led to some protests from various politicians and social groups; For example, the French actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot criticized the company for processing meat that comes from animals that are slaughtered in the most cruel way. The city of Roubaix has sued a quick snack bar because it only offers food made according to Islamic regulations. That was discrimination, it said from the town hall. Mayor René Vandierendonck said he didn't mind that the company also offered so-called halal meals. But it goes too far for Quick to only offer Islamic food in the restaurant in Roubaix.

The city of Marseille also criticized the new offer in two Quick branches, in which pork was removed from the menu and replaced with turkey meat. That is why town hall employees spoke to the managing directors of the two restaurants and suggested that the traditional menu be reintroduced at the same time. The green European politician Daniel Cohn-Bendit , however, showed little understanding for this discussion. After all, there are also Jewish restaurants in Paris that only serve kosher food, Cohn-Bendit told a television station. Among other things, his statement was: “So what? If you want to eat other meat, go somewhere else. "

On January 22, 2011, a fourteen-year-old died in Avignon of food poisoning after eating at Quick.
