Quing is the second album by the rapper Sookee . It was released on February 24, 2010 via Springstoff Records.

Emergence

Four years after her debut album Kopf Herz Arsch , Sookee, who says she is now much more adept at rapping, recorded her second album. In the meantime, the contact with her two colleagues at Springstoff, Mad Maks and BierPimp, cooled off. In the meantime, she met the band Headlines and the rapper Wallpaper , with whom she subsequently appeared more often.

“Quing” was chosen as the title, which also represents her alter ego . The latter is typical of the hip-hop scene. Other rappers also often use pseudonyms and / or alter egos. The word "Quing" is a play on words from the English words "queen" and "king" (German: king). The rapper justified this with the fact that on the one hand there was a song with the title on the album and on the other hand that it “relates to the entire content”.

Cover

The cover is in the colors purple, white and black as well as in the screen printing style. At the bottom right, in front of a white background with purple and black splashes of paint, the purple silhouette of the artist can be seen, who is holding a microphone in her left hand. At the top left, the writing “Sookee” can be seen in black, “squiggly” script, underneath it in purple in capital letters “QUING”, with the Q and G having extra-long bars. The letters are arranged in such a way that even when turned 180 degrees, the lettering can still be read as "QUING". The album does not contain a booklet.

Versions

The album was released in two different versions. In addition to the standard version with 18 titles, there was also a so-called Premium Edition , which contains remixes of the pieces Klinge , Konstruktiv , Milady , Besinn Mich and commentary function as well as 12 minutes . Sookee recorded the latter for the sampler Conscious 2.0 , released in March 2009 , a sampler on which several performers from the Conscious Rap subgenre are represented.

Style and texts

Stylistically, the album can be assigned to Conscious Rap. Guest rappers are Kobito from the headlines (on Release ) and Wallpaper (on Pro Homo ). Most socially critical issues are addressed. For example, pieces such as the entrance , Trinity and Seven Mile Sneakers are about self-reflection. The title song Quing characterizes her alter ego. In Pro Homo the very widespread homophobia in the hip-hop scene is criticized; in the stanza recited by wallpaper, the views of Pope Benedict XVI. on this subject denounced as backward looking. On the learning process , the artist critically examines the three songs Marvin & Justin , 8ung and Untitled from her debut album.

reception

The album is received very positively in L-Mag magazine . It brings “a driving R'n'B sound, thoroughly honest hip-hop and emotional soul under one hat” . A similar opinion is represented on digitales-zimmer.de; the conclusion there is as follows: “Not just an album that you have to listen to, but that you absolutely want to have! With this palette of first-class beats, the flow of a Quing and the profound lyrics, Sookee puts a disc on the table that has it all ! " The portal rap2soul.de described the album as " an innovative complete work of spoken song without any quack pose, but with it a lot of anger and positive energy " and certified the artist, " to deliver a courageous all-round view of her personal, musical and political (further) development "
