The glass larva ( Quintana atrizona ) is a freshwater fish from the subfamily of the viviparous toothcarps . He is the only representative of the thus monotypical genus Quintana .

features

It is a question of small carpings. Females grow up to 4 cm, males only 2–2.5 cm. The top half of the pointed head is darkly colored. The basic color of the body is gray-yellow, with the abdominal region shining silvery. The body is compressed on the sides and appears translucent. On the sides of the body there are 4–8 black horizontal stripes as well as a weak net markings. The front of the dorsal fin is bordered in black. Especially in dominant animals, the fin can be tinted orange. The other fins are slightly yellowish. Females appear a little paler than their male counterparts. The anal fin of the males is transformed into a gonopodium and is very long compared to that of other viviparous toothcarps.

Occurrence and way of life

The Kärpfling is endemic to western Cuba . The fish are - typical of the subfamily - viviparous, the females give birth about every 28 days between 10 and 25 young fish that are 3–4 mm long.

Systematics

The next related genus is Carlhubbsia , of which two species have been described so far, which occur in Mexico and Guatemala . Quintana is assigned to the Poeciliini tribe within the viviparous toothcarps . The species is considered to be very original.
