The Réserve écologique Claude-Mélançon is a 534.59 hectare protected area established in 1988 in the south of the Canadian province of Québec .

The reserve represents the northern Appalachian Mountains and the Mégantic hills. The next largest city is Lévis , the capital of the administrative region Chaudière-Appalaches .

The reserve is between 450 and 950  m above sea level. The highest point is the Saint-Magloire mountain. The rocky subsoil of the area, which belongs to the northern end of the Appalachian Mountains, contains mainly slate and limestone as well as post-glacial deposits.

The vegetation changes mainly with the height above sea level. Accordingly, yellow birch trees predominate in the lower-lying areas, paper birch trees in higher areas , and wood sorrel ( Oxalis montana ) higher up .

As great as the biodiversity of plants is, as great is that of animals. Mammals include elk, white-tailed deer , beaver , fox , coyote , rabbit , Canadian lynx , black bear , spruce marten , ermine , American otter , American mink , various tree squirrels , as well as voles and shrew species .

25 species of birds breed in the area alone, and numerous other species stay here temporarily.

The name of the reserve is reminiscent of the naturalist Claude Mélançon (1895–1973), who worked with various organizations, including the Société Provancher d'histoire naturelle du Canada and the Société zoologique de Québec . Especially in the field of plant protection, his main focus, he campaigned for the preservation of the biotopes in the province.
