The Mont Mégantic is a 1105 m high mountain in the Canadian province of Québec .
It is located in the regional county town of Le Haut-Saint-François and belongs to the Montérégie hills , but lies to the east, in the Cantons de l'Est , not far from the border with the USA .
The mountain consists of a granite - intrusion from the Cretaceous period . It is generally conical in shape and completely forested.
The Observatoire du Mont Mégantic has been located on the summit since 1978 and has a 1.6-meter telescope. An asphalt road and two footpaths from the south and east lead to the summit.
The Mont Mégantic massif, which is around 10 km in diameter, also includes the following peaks: Mont-Notre-Dame ( 905 m ) in the south, Mont-Saint-Joseph ( 1065 m ) and Mont Victoria ( 1055 m ) in the east and Pain de Sucre ( 650 m ) to the west. Mont Mégantic itself and most of the mountain range have formed the Parc national du Mont-Mégantic provincial park since 1994 .
