The Réserve écologique Irénée-Marie is an ecological reserve in the south of the Canadian province of Québec .

It was established in 1985 on an area of 189.36 hectares and is located in the county council of Mékinac on the Rivière Matawin , about halfway between the communes of Saint-Michel-des-Saints and Rivière-Matawin .

It protects pine forests that are unusual for the province, especially Weymouth pine ( Pinus strobus ), American red pine ( Pinus resinosa ) and Banks pine ( Pinus banksiana ). In Québec , the white pine is usually called Pin blanc d'Amérique or simply pin blanc , i.e. white pine , while the bench pine is usually called pin gris , i.e. gray pine . Their presence, along with white and red pine, is extremely rare in Québec. This type of mixed forest covers the entire protected area.

In addition to a rocky steep slope, the area, which rises between 290 and 490  m above sea level, mainly consists of a plain covered by thin layers of sand that go back to the last Ice Age or the time after. The very old formation of Mékinac consists of metamorphic rock and melt rock . The steep slope is characterized by the alternation of Tillit and Fels. While the water runoff is moderate on the plain, it is very strong on the steep face.

Bank and red pines prefer the steeper locations, all three types of pine can be found on the flatter areas. Forest fires have caused considerable damage to the area, so that black spruce trees ( Picea mariana ) are increasingly settling.

The name of the reserve refers to brother Irénée-Marie (Joseph Caron, 1889–1960), a nature lover from Grand-Mère . He worked closely with Brother Marie-Victorin, one of Québec's most important botanists and founder of the Montréal Botanical Gardens. Several plant varieties are named after him, such as Staurastrum arctiscon v. truncatum Irenee-Marie .
