The Réserve écologique Marcelle-Gauvreau is a protected area established in 1990 on an area of 116.5 ha in the south of the Canadian province of Québec in the regional county municipality of Le Fjord-du-Saguenay .

It is located on the north side of the Sainte-Marguerite River 22 km northwest of the municipality of Sacré-Cœur . It represents and protects the forests typical of the Contreforts des Laurentides du Saguenay ecoregion and the Saguenay Mountains , in which the yellow birch dominates.

The protected area, cut up by hills from southwest to northeast, is located between 100  m on the Rivière Sainte-Marguerite and 500  m above sea level. The subsurface of the region consists mainly of gneiss and quartz . Then Tillit arrived during and after the last ice age , but it is broken up by rock in the higher elevations. Podzol was formed, interspersed with rock and stone and moderately to slightly soaked.

Yellow birch, white pine , western arborvitae ( Thuja occidentalis ) predominate, further up there are black spruce and laurel roses .

Statue of Brother Marie-Victorin in the Montreal Botanical Gardens

The name of the area goes back to the scientist Marcelle Gauvreau (1907-1968), the brother Marie-Victorin, a botanist met when she herself was a librarian at the Institut botanique du Jardin botanique de Montréal , the Montreal Botanical Institute of the Botanical Garden. Together with L'Éveil, she founded a school for botany classes for the Sœurs de Jésus-Marie . She mainly dealt with the marine algae world. She played a major role in the writing of the Flore laurentienne . There is a collection with her name at the University of Montreal.
