The area lies on a plateau, which consists mainly of Grès de Potsdam ( quartz chippings ) and dolomite ; the gradient is usually less than 5%, at most 10%. Tillit was deposited above this during and after the last Ice Age . In part of the area brown earth predominates, with a pH value of 6.1 to 7, in the remainder of the wetter area in the southwest of the forest there are mainly black ash and American elm on flat, slightly bumpy terrain . Carya cordiformis from the walnut family and the American linden tree are also found in their company . In the drier part of the forest, which mostly covers the reserve, you will find the sugar maple , the American beech and the Canadian hemlock .

The name of the area goes back to the Muir family, who owned the forest from 1830 to 1989. This was very traditional and used appropriate tools and building materials. A tree was only felled when it was sick or particularly crooked. The wood was used exclusively for their own needs and was not sold.
