Location of the reservoir in the catchment area of the Ottawa River |
The Réservoir Baskatong is a reservoir in the Canadian province of Québec .
It was created in 1927 after the completion of the Barrage Mercier dam .
The reservoir has numerous branches and islands; its area is 329 km². (Other information: 413 km², most likely 413 km² is the area with islands and 329 km² without the islands.) The Mercier hydropower plant has been using the gradient of the reservoir since 2007 , with five turbines generating 55 MW at a drop height of 18 meters . The main purpose of the dam is to regulate the amount of water downstream, where there are other, much larger hydroelectric plants.
The main inflow of the reservoir is the Gatineau . Further noteworthy tributaries are:
- Rivière Gens de Terre , coming from the Réservoir Cabonga
- Rivière Notawassi
- Rivière d'Argent
The Réservoir Baskatong can be reached via several short forest roads that branch off from Route 117 . It is located about 200 km north of Ottawa and about 290 km northwest of Montreal .
The reservoir is a popular fishing spot. There are more than 20 outfitters along its banks. The edible fish in the lake are eyeglasses , pike , American char , coregonus and the inland form of the Atlantic salmon .
