Rétablissement (East Prussia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rétablissement was the name given to the reconstruction of the country in East Prussia after the great plague between 1709 and 1740.

prehistory

The fourth (the great) plague claimed about 240,000 lives in East Prussia between 1709 and 1711; 9,827 people died in Königsberg alone , a quarter of the population. The rebuilding of the deserted country began, albeit very slowly, in the last years of King Friedrich I's reign . When he died in 1713, only two fifths of the extinct farms had been taken over and farmed by the sons of local farmers or immigrant Lithuanians .

“Prussia is totally ruining me, it eats me up,” groaned Friedrich Wilhelm I about the cost of rebuilding. He had “those who wanted to settle from the Palatinate and Nassau, 2,000 Swiss and 17,000 Protestants who were expelled from Salzburg because of their beliefs immigrate to East Prussia. As a result, the East Prussian population grew by 160,000 to around 600,000 between 1713 and 1740. The population of East Prussia grew into a community of states, not least because of the personal ties to their princely patrons from Germans of different tribes and foreigners, including Lithuanians. "

The rétablissement was promoted by Karl Heinrich zu Waldburg after his death by Friedrich von Görne .
