River course
The Río Arenillas flows through the coastal plain of the province of El Oro . It is fed by several source rivers that arise in the western foothills of the Cordillera Occidental . The Tahuín dam was built on the upper reaches. Below the dam, the Río Arenillas flows 16 km to the northeast and passes the eastern outskirts of Arenillas . Then the river turns north-northeast, later north. Finally, the Río Arenillas 12 opens km northwest of Santa Rosa in the strait Estero Grande , which the archipelago Jambelí separated from the mainland.
Catchment area
The catchment area of the Río Arenillas covers about 600 km². In the west it borders on that of the Río Zarumilla , in the east on that of the Río Santa Rosa .
Tahuín dam
The dam ( ⊙ ) was built between 1976 and 1987. A 440 m long dam dams the Río Arenillas at river kilometer 45. The storage volume of the reservoir is 210 million m³. The dam is used to irrigate a cultivated area of 8,000 hectares, to control runoff and prevent flood damage, as well as to supply the cities of Arenillas and Huaquillas with drinking water .
