River course

The Río Chone arises at the confluence of the Río Grande and Río Mosquito 6 km northeast of the city of Chone . It flows in a westerly direction. After 7 km the Chone Canal branches off to the left. This runs south of the city of Chone and ends in the Laguna El Canal . The Río Chone takes the Río Garrapata from the right and then runs along the northern outskirts of Chone. At river kilometer 34 the Río Carrizal meets the Río Chone coming from the south. This eventually flows into the Pacific Ocean. It forms a large estuary that opens to the Bay of Caráquez . The E15 trunk road crosses the river at its mouth. The town of Bahía de Caráquez lies on the western bank of the river, and San Vicente on the eastern bank .
