The Río Térraba ( Spanish : Río Grande de Térraba ) is the largest river in Costa Rica . It flows through the south of the country and flows into the Pacific .

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Río Térraba covers approx. 5085 km² (= 10% of the land area of Costa Rica) and extends over a length of 160 km. The river arises from the confluence of the Río General and Río Coto Brus . Large parts of the catchment area are dominated by pineapple plantations. South of the river mouth is the Térraba-Sierpe Conservation Area (Spanish: Humeda Nacional Térraba Sierpe ).

Economic use

There were plans to dam the Río Térraba to generate electricity. Protests by the local Boruca people ultimately led to the fact that this Boruca dam was not implemented as planned and the project was replaced by the El Diquís hydropower project . This provides that the Río General, a source river of the Térraba, should now be dammed. The population in this area is called Térraba , analogous to the Térraba River . They are now protesting against the damming of the Río General.
