The Río Verde is a left tributary of the Rio Pastaza province Tungurahua in Ecuador .
River course
The Río Verde rises on the southwest flank of the 4506 m high Cerro Hermoso in the Cordillera Real . The course of the Río Verde begins at the 3860 m high mountain lake Laguna El Cable . The Río Verde flows mainly in a southerly direction through the mountains and after 23 kilometers at an altitude of 1315 m near the town of the same name, it reaches the Río Pastaza, which flows eastwards. The estuary is 14 km east of Baños . Immediately above the mouth, the river falls about 80 m. The 61 m high waterfall is called El Pailón del Diablo and is a symbol of Ecuador.
Hydrology and catchment area
The Río Verde drains an area of 136 km². The mean discharge is 19.6 m³ / s. The catchment area of the Río Verde is located in the Parroquia rural Río Verde in the canton of Baños de Agua Santa . It is separated by mountain ridges from the river valleys of the Río Muyo (also Río Verde Chico ) in the west and the Río Topo in the east. The catchment area above river kilometer 11 is within the Llanganates National Park .
