The Río Topo is a 41 km long left tributary of the Rio Pastaza province Tungurahua in Ecuador .

River course

The headwaters of the Río Topo are located in the Cordillera Real northeast of Baños at an altitude of about 3100  m . The Río Topo arises at the confluence of several streams. The Río Topo initially flows 12 km in a south-easterly direction and then turns south. The Río Topo finally flows into the Río Pastaza, which flows to the east, at an altitude of about 1200  m . The estuary is 26 km east of Baños. The E30 trunk road (Baños– Mera ) crosses the Río Topo immediately above its mouth. The catchment area of the Río Topo is in the Parroquia rural Río Negro in the canton of Baños de Agua Santa .

Catchment area

The catchment area of ​​the Río Topo is separated from the neighboring river valleys by mountain ridges. The Río Verde runs further to the west , in the north the catchment area borders on that of the Río Napo . The Río Topo drains an area of ​​436 km². The catchment area above river kilometer 18 is located within the Llanganates National Park .
