The children's film Rölli and the Elves is a Finnish fantasy film from 2001. It was based on an idea by Allan Tuppurainen .

action

The people of the so-called Rölli trolls land on the coast of a previously unknown country. You are looking for a new home. The trolls are led by their old king, who saw this land as the new home of the trolls in a vision. Once in the forest, the trolls find a village. The forest elves live there . When they see the trolls coming, they flee. The trolls are now settling down in the village. Only the troll Rölli thinks that this is not correct and prefers to settle in a hut a little outside the village.

The old king has come to believe that his job is done. He abdicates and lets his people choose a new king. After the king leaves the village, the trolls want to choose a successor. After only Rölli's best friend Zankapfel and the former royal advisor, the lackey troll, stood for election, the biggest and strongest of the trolls, whom everyone only calls "giant", applies. The lackey troll enforces the giant as the new king by intimidating the other trolls with his strength. The apple of contention raises an objection and tries to convince the childlike-naive giant not to let the lackey troll use him, but is only thrown through the air. After the coronation of the giant, the elven folk pays the trolls a visit and welcomes them, but the lackey troll doesn't want to know anything about them and sends them away.

Rölli did not participate in this dispute, but followed the king. He has withdrawn to a lonely place to die peacefully. Now that the king has died, he will be reborn as a turkey. Rölli is amazed when he sees this. He reports about it to the other trolls, but they don't want to know anything about it.

The elf Milli has meanwhile gone to the village alone to negotiate with the trolls again. But they still do not want to know anything about peaceful coexistence and persecute them. At first she managed to escape and found shelter with Rölli. At first, Rölli does not want to know anything about Milli's proposals. On the other hand, he is not entirely averse.

The pursuers have now discovered Milli at Rölli's, and together they try to flee. But eventually Milli is captured. Rölli thinks that everything is already right and goes to sleep. But his remorse does not let him sleep, although he usually sleeps a lot and long. He tells himself that his insomnia is only due to the moon.

The next day, Rölli made a decision and freed Milli. Since he knocks down the giant (albeit accidentally), he becomes the new king of the trolls. Meanwhile, Milli can flee to her people. She meets the weighing master. This measures the balance between good and bad. He worries that evil will prevail and the sun will darken the earth. This has been reported to him by his birds, which he sends out as messengers.

Time goes by, and trolls and elves live side by side but not together. When some elves took care of themselves from Rölli's garden because they had not found enough food on the beach, Rölli wanted to take revenge against the elven people. And so the trolls go to war against the elves. Rölli thinks he could control the situation and the elves will only be chased away. But in the course of the escalation Milli is run over by a stone and remains motionless. The equilibrium begins to shake and the sun darkens.

Then the weighing master appears and asks Rölli what his greatest wish is now. He says he misses Milli a little. Or maybe not. In any case, trolls and elves couldn't live together. The weighing master then says that the answer would be in Rölli's heart.

Milli is laid out in the place where the old king was born again. After Rölli had another restless night, he now knows what his dearest wish is. He goes to Milli and is glad that she hasn't turned into a bird yet. He asks them to just be friends. What Milli wanted from him from the start. Milli wakes up again, and from then on trolls and elves live peacefully together.

analysis

The fantasy film gives children a differentiated worldview. Good and bad are initially clearly divided, as is typical of the genre. The trolls are the bad guys and the elves are the good guys. But the role model for the children, the Troll Rölli, shows both sides. By ultimately rebelling against the seemingly irrefutable traditions of his people, he shows that everyone has the power to change something.

Precisely because the figure to identify with is not all good, children learn that everyone has both sides within themselves. And that in life it depends on the personal decision how you develop.

Awards

Rölli und die Elfen won three Finnish Jussi awards in 2001.
As the best film, for the best costumes, and for the best decorations.
