The Römerbrücke is a historical arch bridge over an oxbow lake near Osnabrück . The bridge, which consists of three arches, is a monument of the city of Osnabrück.

The bridge, built in 1718 from square rubble stones, originally spanned the river Hase. As the river a few decades ago for a flow control was turned over, a part of the former Hare Betts bayou remained at the bridge. The name Römerbrücke does not originate from the Romans , despite the nearby Kalkriese discovery region . More likely, the name derives from a family Röper who owned arable land nearby.

The border between the districts of Pye and Eversburg runs through the old arm of the Hase and thus in the middle of the Roman Bridge . Since the historic bridge is not designed for modern motor traffic, the passage dimensions were limited to 2 meters in width and 2.8 meters in height.

The ramp to bridge no. 79 (km 10.722) over the branch canal Osnabrück begins just north of the Roman bridge .

Towards the end of the Second World War , on April 3, 1945, the Roman Bridge was taken without a fight and undamaged by the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment of the British Army, which bypassed the city center of Osnabrück to the north. After taking the bridge, a photo was taken by the No 5 Army Film & Photographic Unit whereupon a Comet type tank crossed the Roman bridge. This picture has been published many times in various books and media.

Due to the narrow road situation, the arched bridge is to be supplemented by a foot and bicycle bridge in the future. More than 4,000 cars drive over the narrow bridge every day, which is dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians who also use the bridge. With a span of 25 meters, the additional bridge should only be usable for pedestrians and cyclists, while the Roman bridge should continue to serve car traffic. An initially thought diversion of the cycling and walking around the Altarm around was discarded because of the resulting detour. A car bridge or a detour for cars was also discarded because of the high costs.
