Roman Villa Pfongau

The Roman Villa Pfongau is located on Winklerfeld in the Pfongau district of Neumarkt am Wallersee between Irrsbergstrasse and Bachstrasse.

The Roman villa of Pfongau has been known since the 19th century. It dates from the 1st to 3rd centuries. During the first excavations in 1880, mosaic floors were uncovered; they are lost today. In the 1980s, almost the entire area of the Roman residential buildings was built over with an industrial area without archaeological excavations having been carried out beforehand.

Today's excavations are led by Wolfgang Wohlmayr from the University of Salzburg and Raimund Kastler, the regional archaeologist at the Salzburg Museum , and supported by the Museum in der Fronfeste in Neumarkt am Wallersee and, as a project partner, the Austrian Research Center Dürrnberg . The excavations were authorized by Gottlieb Eppl, today's landowner. Through geophysical measurements (Archaeoprospections, ZAMG 2000) four further Roman buildings could be located.

Recent excavations have uncovered two kilns for making bricks; In addition to roof tiles, special tiles were also manufactured for underfloor heating . The kilns could produce around 250 bricks per day, which indicates a trading company. Brick production was reserved for specialized bricks, the landowners provided wandering bricks with the necessary materials such as clay pits and operating facilities, and these were put into operation by the bricks themselves. The brick makers produced the amount of bricks stipulated in a contract for work, in return they received goods or money.

During the excavation, a Roman storage building measuring 18 × 26 m was uncovered. The beautifully preserved bronze statuette of a Venus (type of Venus pudica = shameful Venus) was discovered by the student Andine Komorowski. The twelve centimeter statuette is known as a sensational find.
