The retention basin Göda is a reservoir on the south-eastern edge of Göda in the extended valley of the Long Water .

Construction and use

Dam overflow

The retention basin Göda was created in 1961 and 1962 as a green basin for flood protection in a waterlogged depression. It is integrated into a system of retention basins to which the basins of Schmölln / OL (1958) and Karlsdorf (1961) also belong. This should reduce recurring flood events (e.g. 1897, 1945 and 1981) or their destructive effects.

In the following years there were several changes, including the installation of a bottom outlet and a flood discharge drain . The conversion for a partial dam for agricultural purposes was aimed for in the 1980s and pushed ahead after the flood event of 1981, during which the dam could only be preserved with difficulty. The renovation was completed in 1983 and in 1989 the permanent traffic jam began. The originally intended purpose of supplying agriculture with process water could no longer be implemented due to the political and structural changes. At the moment, however, the retention basin has, in addition to its primary purpose, a nature conservation and recreational function.

At the beginning of 2009, the state dam administration discovered deficiencies with regard to the standing and flooding safety, which made it necessary to drain the reservoir. The renovation work began in December 2009 and cost around 2.5 million euros. After completion of the construction work, the flood retention basin was dammed again from May 2012.
