Rüdiger John (diplomat)

Rüdiger John is a retired German diplomat . He was most recently ambassador to Ghana from 2014 to 2016 .

Life

After graduating from high school (1969) and military service (1969–1971), John completed a degree in international law in Moscow, from which he graduated in 1976 with a diploma . John then began his diplomatic career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the former GDR . From 1987 to 1990 he worked at the Permanent Mission of the former GDR to the United Nations in New York. In 1990 he moved to the Foreign Office . From 1996 to 2000 he was employed in Turkey, from 1998 as deputy head of the Consulate General in Istanbul. Between 2000 and 2008 he worked in various positions in the outward office.

In 2008 John was appointed ambassador to Niger and was replaced in this position in 2011 by Gordon Kricke , who was previously head of the Germany Center in Mexico City . As ambassador, he supported the program nigéro-allemand de lutte contre la pauvreté Tillabéri et Tahoua-Nord (LUCOP), a Nigerien-German program to combat poverty in the regions of Tillabéri and Tahoua .

In 2011 John moved to Sierra Leone as ambassador , succeeding Thomas Freudenhammer . In this role, he also supported the implementation of seminars by the Wittenberg Center for Global Ethics for young African professionals from politics, civil society, business and science in Freetown . From 2014 to 2016 John was Ambassador to Accra ( Ghana ) and then retired.
