Rütger from Scheven

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rütger von Scheven (* 1661 in Langenberg; † December 24, 1740 in Düren ) was an entrepreneur who built the first paper mill in Düren.

Von Scheven came to Düren as a linen dealer in 1694. On July 9, 1710, he received the concession to build a paper mill. In doing so, he laid the foundation for the development of Düren into the city with the highest density of paper mills in Germany at the time. Since he himself remained without male offspring, he bequeathed his paper mill to his grandson Heinrich Wilhelm Schoeller (1745–1827), the son of his daughter Magdalena (1705–1794), who had married the cloth manufacturer Johann Paul Schoeller (1700–1754) who had moved to Düren . As a result, the Schevensmühle was inherited in 1773 with Heinrich Wilhelm's Eisenreckhammer, which was also converted into a paper mill, and became the Schoellershammer paper factory that still exists todaymerged. Another factory built in 1862, the Neumühle , was incorporated into the Kanzan Spezialpapiere GmbH company in 1981 . Rütger von Scheven is consequently one of the ancestors of the Schoeller family of industrialists .

The Rütger-von-Scheven-Strasse in Düren was named after the entrepreneur by a council resolution of May 31, 1937.
