Rǫgnvaldr Úlfsson jarl ( Swedish Ragnvald Ulfsson ) was a jarl in Sweden and governor of Ladoga (since 1019).

Life

Rǫgnvaldr was a son of Úlfr Skǫglar-Tóstason , Jarl von Västergötland or Östergötland and his wife Ingibjǫrg. She was a sister of the mother of Olof Skötkonung , King of Sweden. His year of birth may have been around 990.

Rǫgnvaldr was a member of the Swedish Thing . In 1018 he was involved in peace negotiations with the Norwegian King Olav II. Haraldsson .

In 1019 he accompanied Ingegerd , daughter of the Swedish king, to Novgorod to see Yaroslav the Wise as their closest confidante. He became their governor in Ladoga . Rǫgnvaldr supported both in the fight with Brjatscheslav , Prince of Polotsk . He was also involved in the attempted murder of Prince Eymundr Hringsson .

In 1028 Rǫgnvaldr hosted Olaf of Norway in Ladoga. This had to flee from Norway.

Marriages and offspring

Ragnvald was married to Ingibjǫrg Tryggvadóttir, a daughter of the Norwegian King Tryggve Olafsson . Descendants were:

  • Úlfr, Voivode in Novgorod (1032)
  • Eilífr, governor of Novgorod (after the death of Ragnvald)
  • Ástríðr

Ragnvald was possibly identical to Ragnvald the Elder from the Hervararsaga. Then he would have been married to Ástríðr Njálsdóttir from Norway around 1028. In this case their son would be Stenkil Ragnvaldsson (1028-1067), King of Sweden (1060-1066).
