Stenkil Ragnvaldsson
Stenkil Ragnvaldsson (* around 1028 , † around 1066 ) was King of Sweden from around 1060 until his death .
Life
According to a historical saga from Västergötland , Stenkil came from the town of Levene , which was in this landscape.
The Icelandic Hervarar saga tells of Stenkil that he was a powerful man of an honorable race. His mother (or stepmother) is said to have been Astrid Nilsdotter and his father the Jarl von Västergötland Ragnvald the old . Stenkil was initially Jarl in Svíþjóð (Svitjod, land of the Svear ) and married a daughter of Emund the Old , whose name is not known. After Emund's death, the Svear elected him King of Sweden , as Emund had left no son. For the first time, a person who did not belong to the family of the Ynglings received royal power. Stenkil died of illness at the time when the Norwegian King Harald III. Hardråde fell in England.
So it was very likely that the year of death of Stenkil could be determined, since it is known that Harald III. Died in 1066 at the Battle of Stamford Bridge .
When Adam of Bremen Stenkil is as a supporter of the missionaries from the Archdiocese of Hamburg described -Bremen. He drove out the Orthodox Bishop Åsmund and set Bishop Adalvard the Elder († around 1064) and then Adalvard the Younger as bishops in Sigtuna , where the first bishopric in eastern Sweden developed. Adalvard the Younger probably started building the first stone church. Stenkil is said to have helped the clergy, who were led by Adalbert von Bremen , to set up a monastery in Sigtuna.
All that is known about his foreign policy is that he was an opponent of the Norwegian King Harald III. Hardråde and his opponent supported Håkon Jarl .
After Stenkil's death, two heirs to the throne, both named Erik, fought over the title of king. One of the two may have been Stenkil's son. In the following battles, however, both died and so another son of Stenkil, Halsten , became King of Sweden.
