Ingegerd
Ingegerd (Swedish Ingegerd Olofsdotter , Russian Ингигерда , Orthodox baptismal name Irina ; * 1001 in Sigtuna ; † between 1049 and 1056) was the second wife of Yaroslav the Wise , Grand Duke of Kiev. She was the mother of the Grand Dukes Isjaslav I , Svyatoslav II and Vsevolod I.
It is uncertain whether she is identical to Anna of Novgorod, who is venerated as a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church (Remembrance days: February 10, April 3).
Life
Ingegerd was a daughter of the Swedish King Olaf Skötkonung and his wife Estrid , daughter of an Obodriten prince .
Ingegerd was to become the wife of the Norwegian king Olaf in 1018 in order to establish peace between the two countries. However, Ingegerd and her father did not appear at the agreed place at the agreed time. The reason was an alternative offer from Yaroslav, Prince of Novgorod and a candidate for the throne of the Grand Duchy of Kiev.
In 1019 she came to Novgorod and took the Orthodox name Irina there. They received their own domain around Ladoga . Possibly the name Ingermanland for this area goes back to their name.
Ingegerd played an active role in her husband's politics. She is said to have commanded troops in the clashes with Prince Brjatscheslav of Polotsk . She was also involved in subsequent peace negotiations. The English princes Edward and Edwin fled to her in Ladoga after fighting with the Danes. The Norwegian King Olaf II fled to her after his expulsion in 1029 with his son and heir to the throne Magnus .
In 1037 the first women's monastery was founded in Kiev, bearing the name of St. Irene. Ingegerd's baptismal name was Irina, so it is believed that she was the initiator.
The date of death is unknown.
