from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vsevolod I. Yaroslavich (* 1030 ; † April 13, 1093 ) from the Rurikids dynasty was Grand Duke of the Kievan Rus from 1078 to 1093 . He was a son of Yaroslav I from his marriage to Ingegerd of Sweden.

His first marriage was to the Byzantine princess Anastasia (or Irina), daughter of the Emperor Constantine IX. , married, second marriage to Anna von Polowzen. This second marriage comes from the daughter Evpraksija, who from 1089 as Adelheid of Kiev became the second wife of the Roman-German Emperor Heinrich IV .

Life

After the father's death in 1054, Vsevolod and the older brother Svyatoslaw seem to have ruled by mutual agreement with the eldest and dominant brother Isjaslav I. Vsevolod was awarded the Principality of Perejaslav with the city of Suzdal as its center, where in 1061 he fended off a first attack by the Cumans and made peace with Khan Sokal.

After a falling out between the brothers, Vsevolod and Svyatoslav supported the city population of Kiev in the expulsion of Izyaslav in the spring of 1073 and Svyatoslav succeeded his brother as Grand Duke. With the help of the Polish Duke Bolesław II , whose cousin he was, Isjaslav wanted to recapture his rule. After Svyatoslav's death in December 1076, Vsevolod renounced the rule in favor of his older brother. In return, Vsevolod was awarded the principality of Chernigov by the re-enthroned Isjaslav . However, since this was originally to fall to Svyatoslav's son Oleg, an open conflict broke out between the brothers on the one hand and Oleg and his ally Boris Vyacheslavich of Tmutorokan on the other. In the decisive battle at Nezhatyna Nyva on October 3, 1078, Oleg was defeated, while Isjaslav and Boris fell in battle. With Isjaslav's death Vsevolod was finally able to assert himself as Kiev Grand Duke.

In the fight with his nephew Oleg, a weakness of the seniority principle became apparent : in order to be able to enforce his claim to Chernigov, he even entered into an alliance with the pagan polo companies , who then invaded Russia. As a result of these disputes, Vsevolod could not continue the campaigns against the old enemy Polotsk , which were successfully resumed in 1084 .

Vsevolod died on April 13, 1093. His successor was Svjatopolk II , a son of Isjaslavs.
