Svyatopolk II (Kiev)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Svjatopolk II. Isjaslavich (* 1050 , † 1113 ) was Grand Duke of Kievan Rus from 1093 to 1113. He was a son of Isjaslav I and the successor of his uncle Vsevolod I as Grand Duke.

Life

Svyatopolk's rule over the Kievan Rus began with a series of devastating defeats against the Cumans in 1093, who forced Svyatopolk to make peace with the Cumans khan Tugorkan in 1094 . To strengthen this peace Svyatopolk married a daughter of Tugorkan. This alliance paid off in 1099 when a Cuman army under Bönek-Khan on the Kiev side near Przemyśl defeated a Hungarian army under King Koloman . Nevertheless, the alliance does not seem to have been too strong, since at about the same time sub-tribes of the Cumans were making new raids into Russia.

The second major problem was the disputes among the numerous members of the Rurikid dynasty, which were favored by the seniority principle , and who were entitled to the title of prince in Rus. At the Princely Day of Lyubetsch , which Svyatopolk II convened in 1097 at the suggestion of Vladimir Monomach , the first attempts were made to restrict the seniority principle. Despite the various agreements made to stabilize the division of power, battles quickly returned between the Rurikids, which Vladimir Monomakh won through his military skills. This gave him such a reputation that he became the undisputed successor of Svyatopolk II in 1113, although this broke the seniority principle.

Svjatopolk had a daughter, Preslava / Pre (d) slava , who married the Hungarian prince Álmos in August 1104 . His other daughter Zbysława of Kiev married Bolesław III. Wrymouth of Poland.
