Svyatoslav II. Yaroslavich (* 1027 , † December 27, 1076 in Kiev ) from the Rurikids dynasty was Grand Duke of the Kievan Rus from 1073 to 1076 . He was the third eldest son of Yaroslav the Wise from his marriage to Ingegerd of Sweden and the founder of the Chernigov line of the Rurikids.

Initially Prince of Volhynia , after the death of his eldest brother Vladimir in 1052 and Yaroslav the Wise in 1054, Svyatoslav was the second eldest of the five sons still alive in the Principality of Chernigov near Kiev. Together with the older Isjaslav , the new Grand Duke, and the next younger Vsevolod , Prince of Perejaslav , he seems to have formed an initially amicable triumvirate. In 1067 they jointly defeated Vezlav of Polotsk and took him prisoner. In the following year, however, they lost a battle against the invading Polovzians on the Alta River, and in the ensuing uprising in Kiev, Wseslav was liberated and proclaimed the new Grand Duke by the people. Although the brothers were subsequently able to drive him away, their unity seems to have been destroyed afterwards. In the spring of 1073 Svyatoslav overthrew Isjaslav with Vsevolod's help and succeeded him as Grand Duke.

Shortly before Isjaslav set off on a campaign with Polish support to retake Kiev, Svyatoslaw died in December 1076. Vsevolod, who was appointed as his successor for a short time, moved towards the older brother and gave him power back without fighting.

Svyatoslaw commissioned two manuscripts during his reign, the Isbornik Svyatoslawa of 1073 and 1076, which are supplemented and illuminated copies of older manuscript collections. He was buried in the Transfiguration Cathedral in Chernigov .

Marriage and offspring

Swjatoslaw was married twice: first with a "Kilikia" or "Cecilia" of unknown origin and around 1070 with an Oda von Babenberg, probably the daughter of Leopold I, Margrave of the Hungarian march .
