The R-21 ( NATO code name SS-N-5 Serb ) was a submarine-based ballistic missile ( SLBM ) of the Soviet Union .

The R-21 was the first Soviet nuclear missile that could be launched from a submerged submarine. It was in service from the 1960s to the 1980s and had a range of around 1,400 km.

The warhead contained a hydrogen bomb with an explosive power of 0.8 to 1 megaton TNT equivalent .

The missiles were installed on Project 629B-class and Project 658M-class submarines .
