Rolf Gerhard Tiedemann

Rolf Gerhard Tiedemann ( Chinese  狄德 滿 , Pinyin Di Deman , born February 8, 1941 in Hartenholm ; † August 1, 2019 ) was a German historian.

Life

Tiedemann left school as a teenager. At the age of 21 he settled with his family in Wisconsin and was later called up for training in the Medical Training Unit of the US Army in Texas during the Vietnam War. He received a BA from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee , followed by an MA and a PhD from SOAS University of London . After several part-time positions, Tiedemann taught Modern History of China at the SOAS Department of History for 20 years, including a sabbatical at the Ricci Institute of the University of San Francisco . After retiring, he worked as a research fellow at SOAS and as a professor of Chinese history at Shandong University in Jinan.

His research has mainly focused on the history of Christianity in China, with particular emphasis on Shandong and the Boxer Rebellion. He died on August 1, 2019 after a long illness.
