The Shandong University ( Chinese 山東 大學 / 山东 大学 , Pinyin Shāndōng Dàxué , abbreviated: Shanda ( 山大 , Shāndà ), English SDU) is a public full university in Shandong, China. It is one of the largest universities in China in terms of student numbers and is directly supported by the Beijing government.
Today's Shandong University is the result of several mergers, spin-offs and restructurings that have involved more than a dozen academic institutions over the years. The oldest predecessor institution, Cheeloo University, was founded by American and English missionaries in the late 19th century. The Tengchow College, the first modern university in China, is also one of the previous schools. Shandong University derives its official founding date from Shandong Imperial University (山东 大 学堂), which was founded in November 1901 as the country's second modern national university.
The university has seven campuses, all but one of which are in Jinan . A campus in the northeast of the port city of Qingdao is being set up. The university has been classified as a key institution by the Chinese Ministry of Education since 1960. She is part of the main initiatives of the Chinese government to promote top universities, including Project 985 and Project 211 .
Master's and doctoral programs are offered in all important disciplines of the humanities, natural and engineering sciences, and medicine. In 2009 the university had around 57,500 students (including around 14,500 postgraduates). It is a partner university of the Ansbach University of Applied Sciences , with which an exchange program in the field of business administration is maintained.
