The Qingdao University of Science and Technology (in Chinese abbreviation :青岛科技大学; pinyin : Qīngdǎo Keji Daxue , English Qingdao University of Science and Technology, QUST), commonly known Qingkeda (青科大), is a university in Qingdao , Shandong , China . It is spread over three locations: the Sifang and Laoshan districts in Qingdao and Gaomi in the neighboring city of Weifang . Over the decades it has grown into a comprehensive university that is nonetheless one of the leading institutions in chemical engineering in China.

history

The university's history began in Shenyang City, northeast China's Liaoning Province , where the Shenyang Light Industry Vocational School was founded in 1950 . Following the Soviet model of a specialized university, the emphasis was placed on rubber production, paper production and the chemical industry. The first year enrolled included 128 students. In 1954, the entire institution relocated to Qingdao, where the Sifang Campus and its main building, which still exists today, were opened in 1956. In 1958 it was renamed Shandong College of Chemical Industry ; since then the university has been directly subordinate to the then Ministry of Chemical Industry. College work suffered tremendously during the Cultural Revolution , and four-year courses were completely suspended for several years. From 1977, when regular teaching could be resumed with the reintroduction of the Gaokao, the situation improved.

In 1980 the college was granted masters degrees , and a year later a distance learning faculty was established. While the renaming of the Institute for the Chemical Industry in Qingdao in 1985 was perceived as a step backwards, at the beginning of the next decade a rapid expansion of the university's range of subjects began, in the course of which foreign languages and computer science were also included. In 2001 the Qingdao Arts and Crafts School incorporated, and the thus enlarged university was given full university status in the same year. The number of students thus reached over 10,000. In 2002, the university was given its current name and moved its main administration together with many faculties to Laoshan. A branch campus in the city of Gaomi opened its doors in 2009.

Schools and Studies

In addition to chemistry, mechanical engineering, materials science and a large number of technical courses, the university now also offers courses in other scientific disciplines, including humanities and computer science. Bachelor's degree programs are offered for 68 subjects, Master’s degree programs exist for 20 subjects with 112 specializations, and the university also has the right to award doctoral degrees in three disciplines . The university also houses two research laboratories owned by the Ministry of Education . There are a total of 19 faculties, which are spread over three locations. Together with the University of Paderborn , the university maintains the CDTF (Chinese-German Technical Faculty). The following main subjects have been awarded national rank:

  • Chemical engineering and technology
  • applied Chemistry
  • Polymer material development
  • Mechanical engineering and automation
  • Process engineering components and control technology

In 2013, QUST was ranked 45th among universities with a technical focus in the Chinese university ranking. It is also one of nine priority universities in Shandong Province.

Sifang campus

Main building on the Sifang campus

The university's old campus is known for its 1950s buildings, which have strong Soviet influence. Sifang is primarily home to those faculties that make up the core profile of the university. The Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is located near the campus .

Laoshan campus

CDTF in Laoshan

The university's head office and its central library are located on the newer, larger campus in Laoshan, which opened in 2002. You can also find the younger faculties here, including economics and humanities. The area is a tourist destination that includes both sandy beaches and the Lao Shan Mountains.

Gaomi campus

There are no faculties of their own in Gaomi, but branches of individual departments. The focus is on economics, chemistry and computer science.
