R. Lawrence Edwards

Richard Lawrence Edwards , called Larry, (born March 14, 1953 in Boston ) is an American geologist and geochemist.

Edwards graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1976 and a master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1986. He received his PhD in geochemistry from Caltech in 1988 . From 1988 he was Assistant Professor and from 1990 Professor at the University of Minnesota . Today he is Distinguished McKnight Professor of Geology and Geophysics there.

He is known for the advancement of uranium-thorium dating and dealt with palaeoceanography and paleoclimatology. His research contributed to the calibration of the radiocarbon method. He examined cave deposits and compared their dating with those of ice cores and ocean sediments in order to reconstruct abrupt climatic changes in the last ice age. He also used his reconstruction of the paleoclimate in archeology, for example, he detected dry spells for the ends of the Tang Dynasty , Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty in China from cave deposits. Conversely, according to his research, periods of rain in the early northern Song Dynasty contributed to population and economic growth (especially rice cultivation) during this period. His study of cave sediments also provided some of the most accurate clues about human-made climate change in recent centuries. He was one of the most cited geoscientists (Thompson Reuters Highly Cited Researchers 2014).

In 2011 he was awarded the Arthur L. Day Prize , highlighting his use of uranium thorium and stable isotope methods for dating abrupt climate changes over the past 500,000 years. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the National Academy of Sciences (2011), and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2008 he became a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and in 2009 he was a Guggenheim Fellow .
