Raymond O'Neil Wells Junior, called Ronny, (born June 12, 1940 in Dallas ) is an American mathematician who deals with function theory in several variables, algebraic geometry, mathematical physics, wavelets and mathematics education.

Wells graduated from Rice University with a bachelor's degree in 1962, received his master's degree from New York University in 1964, where he received his doctorate from Lipman Bers in 1965 (On the local holomorphic hull of a real submanifold in several complex variables). He was professor of mathematics at Rice University since 1965, with a full professorship since 1974, and was chairman of the mathematics faculty there. After his retirement he was a co-founder of Jacobs University Bremen . There he was Professor of Mathematics and Vice President (External Affairs).

He has written books on twistors , wavelets, and analysis on complex manifolds.

In 1970/71 and 1979/80 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . 1967/68 he was visiting professor at Brandeis University and 1983/84 Ulam Visiting Professor at the University of Colorado. In 1984 he was an exchange scientist at the National Academy of Sciences in Bulgaria.

In 1974/75 he was a Guggenheim Fellow and received the Humboldt Research Prize , with which he was visiting professor at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in 1974/75 .

He was editor of the Transactions of the AMS, and he is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science . From 1979 he was on the AMS council. From 1984 to 1987 he was on the US National Committee of Mathematics and 1985 to 1991 on the US Committee of Mathematics Instruction.

Wells has been married to Rena Schwarze since 1963 and has two children.
