The RP Scherer GmbH & Co. KG is a pharmaceutical company with roots in Germany and the USA and is one segment capsule technology to the three global market leaders. In 2012 RP Scherer was taken over by the US pharmaceutical company Catalent .

The "Rotary Die Process" - the basis of soft capsule technology

The Rotary Die Process (rotating rollers) for which the company founder Robert Pauli Scherer (1906–1960) applied for a patent in 1933 is still used today for the production of soft capsules for pharmaceutical purposes and is also known as the " Scherer process ". With Scherer's invention, it was possible for the first time to manufacture and fill large numbers of soft gelatine capsules with precise dimensions. In the year of the patent application, Scherer founded his own company in the USA. The success of his product was so great that just three years later the first foreign subsidiary was opened in Windsor, Canada (province of Ontario ). Another factory followed in England in 1937. RP Scherer GmbH & Co.KG in Germany was founded in 1950 together with Deutsche Gelatine-Fabriken (DGF) as the first German-American joint venture of the post-war period in Eberbach / Baden.

From liver oil capsules to the development of cytostatics

In the early days of the company, RP Scherer mainly manufactured products such as cod liver oil capsules and vegetable oils, substances that can be formulated in soft gelatine capsules orally. Multivitamin preparations and essential oils were also part of the product portfolio. While food supplements were in the foreground of production in the early years, the importance of the soft capsule as a pharmaceutical dosage form increased rapidly.

RP Scherer soon developed into an important partner for the research-based pharmaceutical industry . Today RP Scherer produces pharmaceuticals for the world market and is regularly inspected and certified by the US FDA . The achieved quality and safety standard is made clear by the cytostatic unit for the production of soft capsules. RP Scherer GmbH & Co.KG is the only soft capsule production facility in the world with a separate system for processing highly active ingredients such as cytostatics . The soft capsule technology from RP Scherer now contributes to improving the bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs.

Takeover by Catalent

In February 2012, the US company Catalent, based in Somerset (New Jersey), announced that it had taken over 100% of the company shares from RP Scherer and that it wanted to fully integrate the German group into the US company in order to better serve the European market to be able to deliver.
