REBIRTH (Regenerative Biology to Reconstructive Therapy) is a cluster of excellence initiated by the Hannover Medical School (MHH) . Its funding was approved in 2006 as part of the Excellence Initiative. The first funding period lasted five years and ended in October 2011. In 2009, the federal and state governments decided to continue the Excellence Initiative until 2017. An application for a third funding period was unsuccessful in 2018.

In addition to the MHH, six other partners are involved in REBIRTH: Leibniz University Hannover , the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover , the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine , the Institute for Farm Animal Genetics Mariensee , the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research Braunschweig and the Max Planck -Institute Münster .

A cross-university and interdisciplinary orientation aims to achieve scientific networking and cooperation between the institutions of the universities, non-university research institutes and industrial partners. Axel Haverich , medical director of the Clinic for Cardiac, Thoracic, Transplant and Vascular Surgery at the MHH acts as the spokesman for the REBIRTH Cluster of Excellence .

aims

The aim of the research is to function as an institution for regenerative medicine through interdisciplinary cooperation of the scientific areas integrated in REBIRTH, which is active with therapeutic strategies in the areas of blood-forming, cardiovascular, respiratory and hepatopancreatic medicine. Based on the knowledge gained in the area of basic research in REBIRTH and the transfer to experimental medicine, new approaches and technologies for medicine are to be developed. The focus is on the organ systems heart, blood, lungs and liver. The identification of relevant mechanisms of regenerative processes makes it increasingly possible to influence undesired processes and to develop regenerative therapies , i. H. to support the organism in regenerating itself. The path to clinical application is to be prepared through translational studies.

Global goals are

  • Expansion of a center for basic and translational studies in the research areas of stem cell biology and tissue engineering in hematopoietic, cardiovascular, respiratory and hepatopancreatic medicine
  • Establishment of an institution for the implementation and execution of regenerative clinical studies with a focus on biological safety and predictability.
  • Establishment of cross-institutional networks by establishing dual management structures from clinical departments and technical / scientific institutes with a regenerative focus.
  • Strengthening the position as a nationally and internationally operating network that conducts sustainable research.
  • Promotion of young talent and promotion of equality.

Research profile

REBIRTH focuses on diseases of the hematopoietic system (including immunity), heart, respiratory system, liver and pancreatic beta cells. The main research areas range from the molecular and cell biological investigation of organ regeneration and stem cells to cell and tissue cultivation and include:

  • Cell therapies and (embryonic) stem cells
  • Cell reprogramming, differentiation and proliferation
  • molecular toxicology and genetics
  • Tissue engineering ("tissue engineering")
  • (Bio) materials & polymers
  • Nanotechnology, use of lasers and biophotonics
  • Fluid flow & biothermodynamics
  • Imaging procedures
  • Biocompatibility
  • "GLP" method " Good Laboratory / Manufacturing / Clinical Practice"
  • Clinical studies

structure

Overview of the structure of REBIRTH

The REBIRTH Cluster of Excellence is divided into four areas:

A) Regenerative Biology and Related Sciences with topics related to (cell) reprogramming, differentiation, organogenesis and aging. B) Reconstructive Therapy in Preclinical Models in preclinical models with cell therapy, tissue engineering, functionalized implants and the necessary technologies and C) Translation with imaging methods and clinical studies. D) The overarching area D (Human Resources) bundles the training programs.

Promotion of young researchers (PhD program "Regenerative Sciences")

The aim of the Regenerative Sciences doctoral program is to train students with different educational backgrounds in an interdisciplinary manner in order to promote communication between the disciplines. The core of the 3-year program is an individual research project in the field of regenerative science, which is carried out in a laboratory participating in REBIRTH. The research work is supplemented by a curriculum, which consists of common and individual components. In the first two years, weekly seminars and tutorials give doctoral students basic knowledge in the areas of developmental biology and organogenesis, epigenetics, stem cell biology, inflammation, "cell and tissue engineering", growth factors, materials science, laser technology, tissue processing and conservation, organ transplantation, and human animal models Diseases, regeneration of the blood and immune system, liver and pancreas, heart and blood vessels, lungs, nerves, skin, bones, cartilage and tendons, clinical studies, industrial production and marketing. The doctoral students are taught by scientists from the institutions involved in REBIRTH. This curriculum is supplemented by a course program that has both technical and interdisciplinary components. The doctoral students do research in laboratories at the Hannover Medical School, the Leibniz University Hannover, the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research, the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine, the Laser Center Hannover, and the Institute for Farm Animal Genetics, Mariensee. The PhD program is funded by the REBIRTH Cluster of Excellence. The speaker is Christopher Baum.

Personnel development

The supervision and training of the scientists should not end with the doctorate. Therefore, personnel development is a declared goal of REBIRTH. Partners are the Hannover Medical School and the Leibniz University Hannover, as well as the inter-university further education (HÜW). The REBIRTH junior researchers receive further support in the non-academic area through the daycare and kindergarten places allocated to them.
